Introduction

Comme chez Soi means “like at home” in French, and is a Belgian institution. The restaurant has existed since 1926 when Georges Cuvelier founded it under the name “Chez Georges”. Its current name appeared when patrons said that eating there was as if eating at home. In 1936 it moved to its current location in Place Rouppe. The restaurant was being taken over by Louis Wynants who had married Georges Cuvelier’s daughter and in the 60’s Pierre Wynants goes into the family business. These days the restaurant is led by Pierre Wynants’s daughter Laurence Wynants welcoming and her chef husband Lionel Rigolet. From 1979 to 2006 under the guidance of Pierre Wynants, the restaurant had 3 Michelin stars. Upon his departure, one star was removed (as is common procedure by Michelin when the head chef leaves). Since then, the restaurant has continuously maintained 2 Michelin stars.  Certain of the dishes have been passed down for 4 generations, but the menu also includes new additions by Lionel Rigolet. You can either eat in the Horta inspired dining room, the chef’s table in the kitchen or in one of the two private salons for private dining.

Comme chez Soi is also the only place in the world outside the vineyard Château d’Yquem to have bottles of every single one of their wines ever produced.

– A classic choice for a fine dining experience when in Brussels –

Review

Comme chez Soi was my first experience of eating at a Michelin star restaurant at the age of 8. My parents have since over 27 years celebrated special occasions there starting from their wedding, and it is our families go to restaurant for anniversaries, birthdays or religious celebrations. Comme chez Soi has many loyal guests that have been going there for over a decade, which speaks for the quality of the restaurant both in terms of gastronomy and service. Upon arrival, you will be welcomed by Laurence Wynants, who will show you your table and give you the menu of gastronomy prepared by her husband, head chef Lionel Rigolet.

Comme chez Soi keeps a database of its clients, which means that if you previously drank a wine there but do not remember its name upon your next visit, they can tell what you drank. You can trust their sommelier for any wine recommendation to accompany your meal.

Timeless classics include the “Mousse of ham from the Ardennes Pierre Wynants” and “Sole fillets with a mousseline of Riesling and shrimps”. When requested ahead the mousse of ham can be prepared for you to take home.

On Fridays, and Saturdays there is a set menu from which you can choose 5, 6 or 7 courses with wine pairing if you wish. We chose to have the 5-course menu with the warm cheese. Please note that some of the dishes included in the menu given in the restaurant are listed here in the weekday menu for 99€. The food by Lionel Rigolet varies from the traditional dishes on the menu which has been developed by Pierre Wynans, but both are equally nice to eat. However, my recommendation would be to stick to either or as the dishes follow better that way, due to the fact that the traditional dishes are traditional French, while the new dishes have a foreign inspiration.
